Engraved wood or print: how to spot decor that lasts

Two wall decorations can look alike in a photo and have nothing in common. One is cut from solid wood, the other is an image printed onto a panel. Two years later, the difference is obvious.

Here is how to tell handcrafted engraved wood decor from an industrial reproduction, before you buy.

Relief is the first clue

An engraved or cut piece varies in thickness : the design goes into the material. Under raking light you can see the shadows it casts. A print stays perfectly flat. A photograph can fake relief, your hand cannot.

It is the simplest test : run a finger over the design. If you cannot feel it, it is not engraved.

The material changes with time

Solid wood darkens slightly and takes on a patina over the years. That is ageing, not damage : the piece keeps its shape and its relief.

A printed panel goes the other way : the colours fade and the edges lift.

The edges never lie

Look at the side of the piece. Solid wood shows a continuous grain, sometimes a knot. Printed MDF shows a uniform, beige, grainy edge, usually covered with a strip to hide it.

What small-batch making changes

A workshop piece is never quite identical to the next one : the grain differs, the tone varies slightly. That is not a flaw, it is the signature of the material. Industrial production aims for the opposite : a thousand strictly identical copies.

This has a practical consequence. A workshop piece can be adapted : a first name, a date, a specific size. That is impossible on a printed run.

Five things to check before buying

• Thickness : below 3 mm you are looking at thin plywood, which warps.
• Edge finish : hand-sanded, or left raw after cutting ?
• The hanging system : designed in, or added as an afterthought ?
• The product photos : real photographs, or a 3D render ?
• Whether it can be personalised : the best sign of genuine made-to-order work.

What about upkeep ?

Almost nothing : a dry cloth. Simply avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which lightens wood unevenly, and unventilated wet rooms. Hung properly, a solid wood cut-out lasts for decades.
